Greenland Institute of Natural Resources invites applications for a research scientist position within the Department of Birds and Mammals. The position is a five-year position with possibility for moving into a permanent position.
We are looking for a scientist to work with research, advice, and monitoring of terrestrial herbivore species.
Responsibilities
The applicant will work on a fully funded terrestrial project aiming at developing an improved understanding of habitat use by herbivores across the landscape gradient from the ice cap to the coast, within the two municipalities Qeqqeta Kommunia (central West Greenland) and Kommune Kujalleq (South Greenland).
The applicant will work closely with scientist from other departments at the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources on this project. Simultaneously, the applicant will contribute to forming the scientific basis for advisory documents to the Government of Greenland.
As an employee of the Department of Birds and Mammals you will participate in:
- projects with our partners in Greenland, Denmark, and internationally
- colleting and processing of data on nature and environment in Greenland
- fieldwork on ecological topics, including the habitat use of grazers
- acquiring baseline knowledge needed for advising the Government of Greenland.
Your qualifications
Applicants should hold a university degree, preferably at PhD level in fields such as biology, ecology, or population dynamics. Important qualifications include experience with research and/or management of herbivore populations and understanding of abundance estimates and the dynamics of harvested populations. Fieldwork experience is required. In-depth knowledge of Arctic conditions is essential.
Personality traits needed for this position include good social communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Fluency in English is essential, while knowledge of Greenlandic and Danish is an advantage, as is knowledge of the Greenland society.
Wages and conditions of employment
Salary and terms of employment, including the right to travel and severance and resettlement, follow the collective agreement between the Government of Greenland and the negotiating organisation in force at the time of accession.
The place of employment is Nuuk. You should expect some travel in connection with fieldwork, dissemination, and meetings in Greenland, but also to the department's other partner countries.
Housing
Unfurnished staff accommodation may be assigned to the post in accordance with the rules in force at any time. Rent and deposit are paid in accordance with the rules applicable at any time for the designated accommodation. The staff accommodation follows the employment relationship and must be vacated at the end of the employment relationship.
Rent and housing standards may vary depending on the age, ownership, etc. of the building. There may be a waiting period for the assignment of permanent staff accommodation, which is why temporary accommodation may take place (accommodation is taxed according to applicable rules).
