The Department of Communication and Arts (DCA), Roskilde University, invites applications for a PhD scholarship from February 1, 2024. The position as PhD is a three-years full-time position.

Department of Communication and Arts
Your daily workplace will be Department of Communication and Arts at Roskilde University. DCA covers RUCs Communication programs (Communication, Journalism, and Performance Design) and Art programs (Danish, Philosophy, History, and Cultural Encounters).

We conduct excellent, interdisciplinary research in the intersection between Communication, Cultural Studies, Social Science, and Humanities, and offer an innovative and interdisciplinary university environment, characterized by diversity with respect to theory, method, and area of study in research and education. Our research is characterized by double impact, i.e. by the highest academic quality, and by a direct interaction with public, private and civil actors in the society.

We have strong research networks and partnerships with local, regional, national, and international partners with the goal of ensuring the highest quality in all our research-based activities.

Description of the PhD project
The PhD project is linked to the research project Who Makes the Climate News?
(WMCN - https://dff.dk/forskningsprojekter?period%3Alist=eq8rwx3oar&instrument%3Alist=4ksj78ghqk&filed_method%3Alist=eldh3vp9k6&SearchableText=), which is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark and runs from 2024-2027. The project is located at the Department of Communication and Arts at Roskilde University, where it is associated with the Journalism and Democracy research group, the Center for News Research, and the Digital Media Lab.

Who Makes the Climate News? studies the powerful interests that are trying to influence both the public and political agenda with regard to climate and climate change. The project builds on the assumption that climate news is influenced by both loud sources, visible to the public in news stories, and quiet sources working behind the media agenda in various power networks, and that the latter might be blind spots in journalism practice. In order to map both 'noisy' and 'quiet' sources, the project combines network analysis with media content analysis and interview analysis. The theoretical framework is field theory combined with media theory and elite theory.

The project consists of a core group of three researchers, each of whom work on integrated sub-projects. The focus of the project is the construction of four original data sets: The first is a mapping of climate policy professionals, the second is interviews with climate policy professionals, the third is interviews with climate reporters, and the fourth is media content of climate reporting. The PhD student will, in collaboration with the other members of the project team, primarily work on the mapping of the climate policy professionals.

The Doctoral School
You will be enrolled as a PhD student at The Doctoral School of Communication and Arts, Roskilde University. The Doctoral School for Communication and Arts (ARTS-PHD) offers a doctoral programme in Communication and Arts in an active, dynamic and cross-disciplinary research environment.
